Genesis is actually the first book of the Bible. Its name comes from its opening words: "In the beginning..." Genesis describes the primordial history of the world (chapters 1-11) and the patriarchal history of the people of Israel (chapters 12-50). Primordial history includes well-known stories such as Creation, the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, and the Tower of Babel.
Patriarchal history begins with the divine promise to Abraham: "I will make you a great nation" (12:2) and encompasses the stories of Abraham (chapters 12-25) and his descendants:
It describes how the Israelites came to Egypt: Isaac and his twin sons Jacob and Esau (chapters 26-36), and Jacob's family, with Joseph as the central figure (chapters 37-50).
Their salvation is described in the next book of Exodus. Therefore, Genesis is considered part of a larger body of material that is understood to constitute the first five books of the Bible, traditionally called the Torah or Pentateuch.
